A Night of Honor, History, and Hellenic Pride in Astoria
On Sunday, March 9, 2025, the Federation of Dodecanesian Societies of America hosted a moving and dignified celebration marking the 77th anniversary of the Unification of the Dodecanese with Greece. The event took place at the Petros Patrides Cultural Hall of the St. Demetrios Cathedral Community in Astoria, New York.

President Maria Maragkou of the Federation opened the ceremony with heartfelt gratitude and emphasis on the importance of historical memory. She particularly acknowledged the contribution of the younger generation:
“Historical memory is not only a tribute to our ancestors—it is a duty to our future. The Dodecanesians of the diaspora continue to keep the flame of Hellenism alive.”
She also paid tribute to the courage of those who resisted Fascism and Nazi occupation and thanked the Federation’s board, sponsors, and volunteers for their tireless commitment.

Consul General Petros Dorizas highlighted the diplomatic and symbolic value of the event:

In what was his final public address before concluding his term, Michalis Firillas, Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus, moved the audience with personal reflections on the Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation of Cyprus:
“The Dodecanese was liberated. Cyprus still waits. And it is counting on all of us—to remember, and to continue the struggle.”
His words were received with deep emotion from an audience that included many from refugee and island communities.

• Poetry recitations by youth, including works by Vasilis Michaelides and original dedications to the Aegean and to historical struggle
• Traditional Dances performed by youth dance troupes from Nisyros and Kassos
